Broad River Watershed Association Board Meeting

Present at Meeting: Dudley Hartel, Jean Smith, Pat Kelly, Victor Johnson, Michael Moody, Debbie Lester, Bud and Mary Freeman, Paul Webb

 

August and September Board Meeting Minutes were presented by Pat. After review Victor moved to approve those minutes. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.

 

Victor presented the September treasurers report. After review Pat moved to approve the treasurer’s report. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.

 

Victor is waiting to hear from the current owner of the office about the rent agreement. Dudley will check on a property in Comer located next to Windstream.

 

Victor reported that GA River Network has approved the Bertram Creek and Shiloh and Skull Shoals sampling projects and the Broad River Canoe Trail project. For the Paddle GA grant.

There was discussion about purchasing a hydrolab to compliment the ecoli sampling at Bertram Creek. Jean had been contacted by two individuals willing to help with sampling. Brent Beall   teaches environmental chemistry at Athens Tech and has a lab with the ability to test for solvents as well as to perform biological testing of the water. He has experience in de-listing a section of the Soque River in North Georgia.  Zach Yurchuck is the director of marketing of the Georgia Kayak Fishing Foundation and founder of the Kayak Anglers of UGA. Pat will contact both to see if they can help with the Shiloh and Skull Shoals Creek and Bertram Creek projects.

Pat will head up the water sampling committee. Victor, Jean and Paul will help. Pat encouraged anyone interested in helping with the sampling to attend an Adopt a Stream Ecoli and Chemical Training available on Nov. 13 in Athens. Victor, Jean and Pat will be attending.

She will also talk to Carly at Camp Kiwanis about having DNR do an Adopt a Stream training at the Kiwanis.

Michael will head up the water trails committee. Mary, Victor, and Pat will help. He will see if GA River Network will meet with the committee to help get started.

 

The Amicalola Falls Land Trust Assembly will be on 25 and 26. at Amicalola Falls State Park. BRWA will pay for registration for any BRWA board member interested in attending.

 

Mary suggested starting a fundraising committee to brainstorm what to do to raise some additional funds for the association. Michael still needs the kiosk display repaired at the BRO.

Mary has several students interested in doing that.

 

Victor asked if anyone wanted to attend the Soil and Conservation Annual Dinner on Thurs. Nov. 11 at Franklin Springs.

 

Kathleen McDowell in Madison County is interested in a conservation easement on her property.

 

Next meeting is Nov. 9 7PM. Victor said we needed to decide where to have the Board Retreat at that meeting.
