Broad River Watershed Association Board Meeting
June 8, 2010
Present at Meeting: Jean Smith, Robbie Griffith, Pat Kelly, Debbie Lester, Bud Freeman, Victor Johnson, Paul Webb, Becca Haynie, Michael Moody, Jeff Pentz
Robbie called the meeting to order at 7PM.
Pat presented the minutes from the May board meeting. They were reviewed. Debbie moved to approve the minutes as written. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
Victor presented the May treasure’s report. Pat moved to approve the May treasurer’s report. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
Victor announced that the BRWA office has been sold to the owner’s son or son in law. Victor will talk to the new owner to see if he will continue to rent to BRWA and what the rent will be.
Paddle GA
Robbie asked everyone if they had any time the week of June18 – 25, volunteers are needed to assist GA River Network conduct Paddle Georgia on the Broad and Savannah River. Jesslyn Shields is the volunteer coordinator and her contact information is on the garivers.org website.
Friday June 18th Pat, Rick, Paul, Jean, Sam, Debbie, Victor, and Dudley are helping. Paul, Pat, Rick, Michael and Victor will be attending the dinner that same evening.
Saturday the Broad River Outpost is shuttling any participant around the rapids below the Outpost.
Sunday at the Elbert County high school Victor will be speaking on the history of the Broad River, Jeff will be speaking on the threat to the watershed from the proposed Covanta Incinerator and Greg Mann and/or Bill Hood will be speaking on the threat from the Broad River Valley Farm poultry waste operation.
Monday Paul and Victor will be paddling elected officials.
Wednesday Pat, Paul and Robbie will be helping shuttle boats around Clarks Hill Reservoir.
Pat, Rick, some of their neighbors, Paul and Robbie will be cleaning up the Hwy 77 river access on Wed. June 16th and again on Monday June 21 at 9AM.
Michael donated 100 maps of the Broad River rapids to BRWA. It was decided to laminate them and sell to Paddle GA participates for $2 at registration.
Jean and Debbie will load up the maps, t-shirts, banners and signs Thurs. and take to registration on Friday.
Becca brought the new banner and signs from the sign shop. They looked good.
Georgia Environmental Network sponsorship was discussed. It will require 50 email addresses, $250 dollars plus fax fee, and someone to monitor the website. Jeff agreed to monitor the website. There will be a direct link from GRN website to the BRWA website. Pat moved that BRWA become a participating sponsor of the GA Environmental Network and spend the additional $250 plus fax fee. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
Victor reported that Dana Skelton from the GA River Network will be the speaker at Annual Meeting. She will speak for 10-15 minutes on canoe trails and show the video from this year’s Paddle GA on the Broad.
Pat reported that the cabinets for the Adopt -A- Stream water monitoring equipment are still being built.
Victor presented the 2011 Budget. After discussion about needing to do some fund raising, Bud moved to approve the 2011 budget as presented. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
Michael thinks if BRWA would spend some money to repair and improve the BRWA display on the kiosk at the Broad River Outpost that it could result in more members and donations.
Pat reported that funding from EPD is looking bad for moving forward with the monitoring projects on Shiloh and Skull Shoals Creeks.
Jean reported eight new members from the Shoal Lily Float.
