Broad River Watershed Association Board Meeting

March 13, 2012

 

Present at Meeting:  Victor Johnson, Paul Webb, Robbie Griffith, Mary Freeman, Bud Freeman, Michael Moody, Jean Smith, Sam Linhart, Brenda Bailey, Pat Kelly

 

Pat presented the minutes from the January and February meetings.  After review and minor corrections Mary moved to approve the minutes as amended. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.

 

Victor presented the February financial statement.  After review Mary moved to approve the statement. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.

Victor asked if the board wants to do a $100 sponsorship for the GA River Network Conference. Brenda moved to send GA River Network $100 for sponsorship for the 2012 Conference. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.

 

Jean reported that the CSX grant application is under review. They will let us know if it is approved. Jean says they are on a 90 day cycle. If it is not approved then a proposal will be submitted to GA Power or other corporations.

 

Michael reported that asphalt had been placed at the Hwy 72 bridge over the Broad River GDOT right of way. It is possibly for bridge repairs.  In addition someone had dug several steps to the river for access.

 

Michael reported that he and Pat are scheduled to meet with the Oglethorpe County Development Authority to urge backing for blue trail access at the Hwy 77 bridge area.

 

Mary reported that the State Science Fair will be Friday March 30 at 2PM at  the Classic Center. Mary will send out email request to Jean, Sam, and Mary and Becca to judge.

 

Victor reported that the board has been asked to sign a letter in support of the Americas Voice for Conservation, Recreation and Preservation efforts in Washington to encourage law makers to not cut conservation funds. Brenda moved to do so. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.

 

Michael reported that the American Fisheries Society UGA Student Chapter is holding a fishing tournament on the Broad from the Outpost on March 31. The fish will be photographed and released immediately after catching. Pat said that Becca had been asked to present BRWA info. She will do it if she can.

 

The GA River Network Conference is the same weekend and Michael will be attending that.

 

Bud asked the board to extend the developable area of the Conservation Easement on their property on the Broad River by 100’ x 75’ in order to install a solar complex. After discussion Michael moved to extend the developable area of the Freeman Conservation Easement by 100’ West x 75’. A drawing will be attached to the motion in the official records.  The motion was seconded and approved with seven yes votes and two abstaining votes.

 

Michael is working on the poster for the Blue Trail kiosks. He has sent it to the Board via email for editing. Michael will be getting the posters printed and installed soon.

 

Pat mentioned looking into providing a way to contribute monthly or quarterly or yearly for membership. Victor suggested talking to Dana at GA River Network. Pat agreed to contact her.

 

Someone wrecked into the porch of the office building but the landlord is taking care of it.

 

Jean and Pat said that they are not getting GEAN notices about GA legislature info. Victor will look into it because he has already sent in the $250 for BRWA to participate.

 

Victor is placing the originals of all BRWA easements and surveys in the files at the office. He does not have the survey of the Oglethorpe County Ruff Rd property. It is not available online. Robbie says he has it and will get it to Victor to add to the office file.

Purvis Woods files are missing.  He will send all board members pdf copies of the files.

 

Easement monitoring is Saturday March17. Pat, Jean and friend, and Mary will do Freeman and Odum Easements. Michael and Brenda will do Ruff Rd. Paul, Victor and Robbie will do Purvis Woods.

 

The April board meeting will be April 10, 2012.

 

The Spring Float is May 19, 2012.
