Broad River Watershed Association Board Meeting
April 13, 2010
Present at Meeting: Victor Johnson, Dudley Hartel, Paul Webb, Jean Smith, Robbie Griffith, Pat Kelly, Debbie Lester, Mary Freeman, Bud Freeman, Becca Haynie, Michael Moody
Pat presented the minutes from March Board meeting. Jean motioned to approve the minutes as written. Motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
Victor presented the March treasurers report. Pat motioned to approve the March treasurers report. Motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
Sam asked that all of the water quality monitoring equipment be moved from his basement to the BRWA office. Another cabinet will have to be purchased but the grant money could be used for that purchase. If some board members could come by before the next board meeting, it could be moved rather quickly. Jean suggested that she and Sam buy the cabinet that is at their house because it is heavy and doesn’t move well. BRWA could then buy two cabinets for the office. Pat agreed to buy the new cabinet(s).
Dudley reported that the dates are now on the website.
Victor reported that it was okay with GRN to give away our old T shirt supply at Paddle Georgia. Debbie agreed to organize the T shirts. Becca agreed to help. Debbie moved to approve giving participants of Paddle Georgia the BRWA T shirts. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Victor said volunteers were needed on Friday afternoon June 18th at Franklin College. That is the evening before the float starts and everyone will be meeting then, probably be around 1PM. Victor will let us know about other volunteer opportunities as he gets the details. Dudley will send out an email with the dates and folks can send back dates they will be available to volunteer.
Isabel is willing to do her presentation on the ferries on the Broad River.
Dudley agreed to put Isabel’s ferries and the fish weirs on a digitized map and send it to Joe Cook.
Mary and Bud agreed to assemble information that needs to go on a revised display for the Broad River Outpost kiosk and for a display to take to Paddle Georgia. Becca agreed to help.
Robbie reported that he had monitored the Ruff Rd. property. He reported a copper color to the water after the county had redone the road and pipe after it blew out from the heavy rainfall.
Paul reported that there was no sign of four wheeler damage on the Purvis property. Several large trees had fallen across the trail which probably discouraged four wheelers. A teenager was on the property baiting coon traps along the creek. He lives nearby and is part of the group that has the hunting lease. He agreed to help keep the four wheelers out.
Dudley said that Sam, Jean, Becca and he had looked at the Science Fair contestants and presented the award to a girl from Thomasville, GA. Mary thanked them for their participation.
Dudley handed out an agenda for annual meeting. He asked for input to add or take off anything. Victor and Michael wanted to get someone to speak on how to establish a canoe trail. It was agreed to contact April Ingle to help find a speaker who could speak on canoe trails.
Dudley said we will need to find 4 new board members for next year by the annual meeting.
Dudley reported that the RDC will start working on a new regional plan starting in Sept. 2010. There will be opportunities for BRWA to get involved.
The Ruff Rd. property is not on the map of Regionally Important Resources. Dudley will try to get the RDC to add it to the map. Purvis Woods needs to be added to another RDC map.
Sam presented a draft Certificate of Award to be presented at annual meeting to any deserving individual(s).
Victor asked if we wanted to get a 2 x 8 banner and have BRWA logo put on our tent. Becca agreed to look into how much it would cost for a 2 x 8 banner and two smaller signs 2 x 3 and a 1 x 2. We have the logo in graphic form. Victor asked if he could borrow the BRWA tent for a festival in Danielsville. Dudley approved.
Shoal Lily Float is on May 22, 2010. Michael’s guys will be available with trailers, boats and guides.
Meeting Adjourned.
